Description

By Henrik Ibsen. One of the great masterpieces of modern literature—a sweeping tale of adventure, fantasy, self-discovery, and redemption by the renowned Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen.

Drawing upon Norwegian folklore and legend, Peer Gynt follows the extraordinary adventures of its restless and imaginative hero, Peer, a dreamer whose boundless ambition and refusal to face reality lead him across mountains, deserts, oceans, and kingdoms. Along the way, he encounters trolls, mysterious supernatural beings, swindlers, prophets, and princes, while continually reinventing himself in his search for wealth, power, and meaning.

Part fairy tale, part satire, and part philosophical drama, Peer Gynt explores timeless questions about identity, truth, responsibility, and the nature of the self. Is a man defined by his dreams or by his actions? Can one spend a lifetime avoiding reality and still discover redemption? Through Peer’s often comic, sometimes tragic journey, Ibsen examines these questions with wit, imagination, and profound insight.

The play is also famous for inspiring the celebrated musical score by Edvard Grieg, whose compositions have become some of the most recognizable pieces in classical music. Together, Ibsen’s poetry and Grieg’s music helped make Peer Gynt one of the most beloved works of Scandinavian culture.

More than a century after its first publication, Peer Gynt remains fresh, entertaining, and thought-provoking. Its colorful blend of folklore, adventure, humor, and psychological depth continues to captivate readers around the world. Whether approached as a dramatic poem, a fantasy epic, or a profound meditation on the human condition, this enduring classic stands among the greatest achievements of nineteenth-century literature.

About the author: Henrik Ibsen (1828–1906) was a Norwegian playwright and poet widely regarded as one of the founders of modern drama. Born in Skien, Norway, he spent much of his career in self-imposed exile in Italy and Germany, where he wrote many of his most influential works. Although famous for realistic dramas such as A Doll’s House, Ghosts, and An Enemy of the People, Ibsen also produced poetic and mythological masterpieces such as Peer Gynt. His exploration of individual freedom, morality, and social convention transformed modern theater and secured his place among the most important literary figures of the nineteenth century.
