About the author: Patrick Weston Joyce (1827–1914) was an Irish historian, writer, educator, and scholar renowned for his contributions to the study of Irish history, language, and folklore. Born in Ballyorgan, County Limerick, Ireland, he was educated at the Royal Institution in Dublin and devoted much of his life to teaching and educational administration. Joyce served as a school principal before becoming one of Ireland’s leading educational inspectors.
